Shadow Pokémon Guide — Should You Purify or Keep Shadow?

You should keep Shadow Pokémon in their Shadow form by default and only purify when three specific conditions overlap: the species can Mega Evolve, purifying creates a 100% IV (hundo) from a 13/13/13+ spread, or you already own a second high-IV Shadow of the same species. Shadow Pokémon deal 20% more damage than their normal counterparts in both raids and PvP, but they also take roughly 17% more damage, cost 20% more Stardust and Candy to power up, and cannot be traded — making purification an irreversible decision that permanently removes the Shadow bonus.

What Are Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon GO?

Shadow Pokémon are corrupted versions of regular Pokémon abducted by Team GO Rocket. They are distinguished by a purple aura, glowing red eyes, and a permanent Shadow Bonus that alters their battle performance. Shadow Pokémon were introduced in July 2019 and have since become a core mechanic for competitive raiding, PvP, and collection completion.

Unlike regular Pokémon, Shadow Pokémon cannot be obtained from wild spawns, eggs, or research tasks. The only sources are Team GO Rocket battles (Grunts, Leaders, and Giovanni) and Shadow Raids at Gyms. Once caught, a Shadow Pokémon knows the Charged Move Frustration — a weak Normal-type attack that can only be replaced during special Team GO Rocket Takeover events using a Charged TM.

Every Trainer faces the same decision after catching a Shadow Pokémon: purify it for guaranteed stat boosts and cost savings, or keep it Shadow for raw damage output? The answer depends on the species, its IVs, your existing roster, and what format you plan to use it in. This guide gives you a clear decision framework so you never waste a rare Shadow catch.

Shadow vs. Purified: The Core Mechanics Explained

Before deciding whether to purify, you need to understand exactly how Shadow and Purified forms differ from regular Pokémon. These are not cosmetic differences — they are fundamental stat and cost modifiers that permanently shape how a Pokémon performs.

Shadow Pokémon Bonuses & Penalties

Stat / Mechanic Shadow Modifier Impact
Attack +20% (×1.2) Higher DPS in raids and PvP; flips damage breakpoints
Defense ~−17% (×0.833) Takes more damage; “glass cannon” playstyle
Stardust Cost +20% More expensive to power up and unlock second move
Candy Cost +20% More Candy per power-up; XL Candy also affected
Trading Not allowed Cannot be traded at all — not even Lucky Trades
Mega Evolution Blocked Shadow Pokémon cannot Mega Evolve
Charged Move Frustration only Weak move; removable only during special events

Purified Pokémon Bonuses & Changes

Stat / Mechanic Purified Modifier Impact
IVs +2 to all (capped at 15) 13/13/13 becomes 15/15/15 hundo
Level Set to 25 Instant level boost regardless of original level
Stardust Cost −10% Cheaper than normal; cheaper than Shadow
Candy Cost −10% Discount on power-ups and second move
Trading Allowed Counts as a Special Trade
Mega Evolution Allowed Can Mega Evolve if species has a Mega form
Charged Move Return Normal-type; 130 damage in PvP, 35 in PvE

Purification is irreversible. Once you tap the Purify button, that Pokémon can never become Shadow again. The Shadow aura, the 20% damage bonus, and the red eyes are gone forever. Because Shadow Pokémon cannot be traded, you cannot ask a friend for a replacement. Treat every purification decision as permanent.

Why You Should Keep Shadow Pokémon — 3 Structural Reasons

The default answer to “should I purify?” is no. There are three structural reasons why keeping a Pokémon in its Shadow form is almost always the safer, higher-value choice.

1
Shadow Pokémon are the strongest raid attackers in the game. The 20% Attack boost puts Shadow versions of Dragonite, Tyranitar, Metagross, Salamence, Garchomp, and Mewtwo at or near the top of their respective type-DPS rankings. In raids, speed matters more than bulk — you want to deal damage before the raid boss fires its charged move. Shadow Pokémon excel at this. A Shadow Mewtwo is the strongest non-Mega Psychic attacker in the game, period.
2
Shadow Pokémon are hard to obtain and impossible to replace. You can only get them from Team GO Rocket battles and Shadow Raids. They cannot be traded — not even as Lucky Trades. If you purify a high-IV Shadow and regret it, your only option is to grind Rocket battles or Shadow Raids again from scratch. There is no walking buddy, no wild spawn, and no field research that produces fresh Shadow IVs.
3
Purification is a one-way door. Almost every other rare state in Pokémon GO — Lucky, Shiny, costume variants — is at least tradable or obtainable from another source. Shadow status is the only state you can permanently destroy with a single tap. The bar to pull the trigger should be extremely high. If you are unsure, keep it Shadow.

Shadow Bonus in PvP — Not Just for Raids

In PvP, Shadow Pokémon are more nuanced but still powerful. The 20% Attack boost lets some Shadow forms land Fast Move breakpoints that their normal counterparts cannot reach — meaning they deal extra damage per Fast Move tick. Shadow Victreebel with Razor Leaf, Shadow Granbull with Charm, and Shadow Tentacruel are all top-tier PvP picks specifically because the Shadow bonus pushes their Fast Move damage over critical thresholds. The trade-off is lower bulk, which means you need to play more aggressively and shield more carefully.

3 Conditions When Purifying Actually Makes Sense

While the default is “keep Shadow,” there are three specific conditions where purification is not just defensible — it is the correct play. The more conditions that apply at once, the stronger the case for purifying becomes.

Condition 1
Species Can Mega Evolve
Shadow Pokémon cannot Mega Evolve. If your species has a Mega form you plan to use — Tyranitar, Garchomp, Gardevoir, Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise — keeping it Shadow blocks one of the strongest power tiers in the game.

Condition 2
Purifying Creates a Hundo
Purification adds +2 to every IV. A 13/13/13 Shadow becomes a guaranteed 15/15/15 hundo. Shadow Raids have a 6/6/6 floor, making a 13/13/13+ roll roughly 1 in 37 — almost 6× better odds than a standard Tier 5 raid hundo.

Condition 3
You Have a Second Copy
If you already own two high-IV Shadows of the same species, purifying one costs you nothing. Keep Copy 1 as your raid attacker; purify Copy 2 for Mega Evolution or collection. This is the cleanest condition.

Use the Shadow Calculator to model the exact stat difference between Shadow and Purified forms for any species, level, and IV spread. See instantly whether the 20% Attack boost or the +2 IV purification bonus wins for your specific Pokémon.

Shadow Pokémon by Format — Raid, PvP & Collection

Not every Shadow Pokémon is worth the same investment. Some dominate raids, others shine in PvP, and a few are purely collector’s items. Here is how to prioritize your Shadow roster by format.

Top Shadow Raid Attackers (Keep Shadow)

Pokémon Type Role Why Keep Shadow?
Shadow Mewtwo Psychic Top Psychic DPS Strongest non-Mega Psychic attacker in the game
Shadow Salamence Dragon/Flying Dragon DPS Outperforms most non-Shadow Dragon types
Shadow Metagross Steel/Psychic Steel DPS Meteor Mash + Shadow bonus = elite Steel damage
Shadow Tyranitar Dark/Rock Dark/Rock DPS Top-tier Dark and Rock attacker
Shadow Garchomp Dragon/Ground Ground DPS Best Ground-type DPS with Earth Power
Shadow Dragonite Dragon/Flying Dragon DPS Outperforms regular Dragonite significantly
Shadow Machamp Fighting Fighting DPS Best Fighting-type raid DPS
Shadow Mamoswine Ice/Ground Ice DPS Dominant Ice attacker for Dragon raids

Top Shadow PvP Picks (Format-Dependent)

Pokémon League Moveset Shadow Advantage
Shadow Victreebel Great Razor Leaf + Leaf Blade Fast Move breakpoint on Razor Leaf
Shadow Granbull Great Charm + Close Combat Charm damage exceeds key thresholds
Shadow Tentacruel Great Poison Jab + Acid Spray Higher pressure, faster shield baiting
Shadow Venusaur Ultra Vine Whip + Frenzy Plant Faster charged move generation
Shadow Poliwrath Ultra Mud Shot + Ice Punch Increased shield pressure
Shadow Mewtwo Master Psycho Cut + Psystrike Highest Psychic pressure in open ML

Shadow Pokémon Worth Purifying (Mega-Eligible)

Pokémon Mega Form Purify If…
Tyranitar Mega Tyranitar You have a second Shadow copy; IVs are 13/13/13+
Garchomp Mega Garchomp You need a Mega Ground/Dragon for raids
Charizard Mega Charizard X/Y You want both Mega forms for type coverage
Venusaur Mega Venusaur You need a Mega Grass for Grass-type raids
Blastoise Mega Blastoise You want a Mega Water for Water-type raids
Gardevoir Mega Gardevoir You need a Mega Fairy/Psychic attacker

How to Get Shadow Pokémon — All Sources in 2026

Shadow Pokémon are not available through normal gameplay. You must seek out specific encounter types to add them to your collection. Here is every current source as of 2026.

Team GO Rocket Battles

Grunts appear at PokéStops and in hot air balloons every 6 hours (starting at midnight local time). After defeating a Grunt, you receive 500 Stardust and a chance to catch one of their Shadow Pokémon using Premier Balls. The number of Premier Balls depends on how many of your Pokémon survive, your Purify Pokémon Medal rank, and your Defeat Team Rocket Medal rank. Grunt Shadow Pokémon have no IV floor — they can be 0/0/0.

Leaders (Arlo, Cliff, Sierra) require a Rocket Radar to challenge. Their Shadow Pokémon are stronger and have a higher catch rate than Grunt Shadows. Leader Shadows also have no guaranteed IV floor.

Giovanni requires a Super Rocket Radar (from Special Research). His Shadow Legendary has a 6/6/6 IV floor — the highest floor for any Shadow encounter. This makes Giovanni’s Shadow Legendaries some of the best candidates for purification to hundo.

Shadow Raids (Introduced May 2023)

Shadow Raids take place at Gyms and feature enraged Shadow Raid Bosses. Three- and five-star bosses enter an enraged state during battle, increasing their Attack and Defense. Trainers can use Purified Gems (crafted from Shadow Shards dropped by Rocket battles) to calm the boss, temporarily lowering its stats. The effects of multiple Purified Gems stack.

Shadow Raid Tier Boss Level Difficulty Rewards
1-Star 20 Soloable Shadow Pokémon + Shadow Shards
3-Star 25 2–3 players Shadow Pokémon + Shadow Shards
5-Star 30 5+ players Shadow Legendary + Shadow Shards

Shadow Raids do not allow Remote Raid Passes. You must be physically present at the Gym. Plan your Shadow Raid schedule around local communities and coordinate Purified Gem usage to calm enraged bosses efficiently.

How to Remove Frustration & Build a Shadow Moveset

Every Shadow Pokémon is cursed with Frustration — a weak Normal-type Charged Move that deals only 10 damage. Frustration cannot be removed with a regular Charged TM outside of special events. This is the single biggest limitation of Shadow Pokémon, and planning around it is essential.

When Can You TM Away Frustration?

Niantic periodically runs Team GO Rocket Takeover Events where Charged TMs can successfully remove Frustration. These events typically coincide with:

  • Seasonal transitions (every 3 months)
  • Special Research releases featuring Giovanni
  • Community Day weekends with Rocket themes
  • GO Fest and Tour events

During these windows, use a Charged TM on your Shadow Pokémon to replace Frustration with a random move from its available Charged Move pool. If you get a bad roll, use additional Charged TMs until you land the desired move. Elite Charged TMs can also be used during these events to teach legacy or exclusive moves.

Best Shadow Movesets by Type

Pokémon Fast Move Charged Move(s) Format
Shadow Mewtwo Psycho Cut Psystrike + Shadow Ball Raid / Master League
Shadow Salamence Dragon Tail Outrage + Hydro Pump Raid
Shadow Metagross Bullet Punch Meteor Mash + Earthquake Raid / Master League
Shadow Tyranitar Smack Down Stone Edge + Crunch Raid
Shadow Machamp Counter Dynamic Punch + Close Combat Raid
Shadow Dragonite Dragon Breath Outrage + Hurricane Raid / Master League
Shadow Mamoswine Powder Snow Avalanche + Bulldoze Raid

Save your best Shadows for Frustration-removal events. Do not purify a Shadow just because it has Frustration. Wait for the next Team GO Rocket Takeover, TM away Frustration, and keep the 20% damage bonus. Use the Shadow Calculator to plan your ideal moveset before spending any TMs.

Common Shadow Pokémon Mistakes

1
Purifying Shadow Mewtwo or Shadow Legendaries by default. Shadow Mewtwo is the strongest non-Mega Psychic attacker in the game. Purifying it for a hundo is only defensible if you already own a second high-IV Shadow Mewtwo. For most players, the first Shadow Mewtwo should always stay Shadow.
2
Purifying for the +2 IV boost on low-IV Shadows. A 5/5/5 Shadow becomes a 7/7/7 Purified — still terrible. Only purify if the result is a 3-star or hundo (13/13/13+). Use the IV Calculator to check the post-purification spread before tapping the button.
3
Ignoring the 20% cost penalty until it is too late. Shadow Pokémon cost 20% more Stardust and Candy to power up. A Shadow Mewtwo from Level 8 to 50 costs roughly 624,000 Stardust and 360 XL Candy — significantly more than a regular Mewtwo. Budget your resources before committing.
4
Not TMing Frustration during events. Many players purify Shadows simply because they are frustrated by Frustration. Wait for the next Rocket Takeover event, use a Charged TM, and keep the Shadow bonus. Purification should never be a workaround for bad moveset management.
5
Purifying a Shadow just for the Mega Evolution. Mega Evolution lasts only 8 hours per battle. Trading a permanent 20% damage bonus for a temporary Mega slot is usually a bad deal — unless you have a second copy (Condition 3) or the IVs are 13/13/13+ (Condition 2).

Shadow Pokémon FAQ

By default, no — you should keep Shadow Pokémon in their Shadow form. The 20% Attack boost makes them the strongest raid attackers for most species. Only purify when three conditions overlap: (1) the species can Mega Evolve, (2) purifying creates a 100% IV (hundo) from a 13/13/13+ spread, or (3) you already own a second high-IV Shadow of the same species. Purification is irreversible and Shadow Pokémon cannot be traded, so the decision is permanent. Use the Shadow Calculator to model the exact stat difference before deciding.

Shadow Pokémon receive a +20% Attack boost (×1.2 multiplier) and take approximately 17% more damage (×0.833 Defense multiplier) compared to their normal counterparts. These modifiers are applied during damage calculation — they do not change the CP number displayed on the summary screen. The Attack boost makes Shadow Pokémon the highest-DPS raid attackers for most species, while the Defense penalty makes them “glass cannons” that require careful play in PvP.

No. Shadow Pokémon cannot be traded at all — not even as Lucky Trades or Special Trades. This is a hard restriction with no exceptions. Once you purify a Shadow Pokémon, it becomes tradeable (as a Special Trade), but you lose the Shadow bonus permanently. This is one of the main reasons why purifying should be a carefully considered decision — you cannot ask a friend to send you a replacement Shadow.

No. Shadow Pokémon cannot Mega Evolve. If you want to use a Mega Tyranitar, Mega Garchomp, or Mega Charizard, you must purify the Shadow Pokémon first. This is Condition 1 for purification — but it is rarely enough on its own. Mega Evolution lasts only 8 hours per battle, while the Shadow bonus is permanent. Only purify for Mega if you also meet Condition 2 (hundo potential) or Condition 3 (second copy).

Frustration can only be removed during Team GO Rocket Takeover Events using a Charged TM or Elite Charged TM. These events happen roughly every 3 months, often tied to seasonal transitions, Special Research releases, or major events like GO Fest. Outside of these windows, Frustration is locked and cannot be replaced. Never purify a Shadow Pokémon just to get rid of Frustration — wait for the next event and use a Charged TM instead.

Purification costs vary by species rarity. Common Shadows like Rattata, Weedle, and Zubat cost 1,000 Stardust and 1 Candy. Mid-tier Shadows cost 3,000–5,000 Stardust and 3–5 Candy. Shadow Legendaries from Giovanni cost 20,000 Stardust and 20 Candy. After purification, the Pokémon is set to Level 25 and receives +2 to every IV (capped at 15). Future power-ups cost 10% less Stardust and Candy than a normal Pokémon.

Return deals 130 damage in PvP (Trainer Battles) but only 35 damage in PvE (raids and gyms). In PvP, Return is a 3-bar Normal-type move with niche value for shield baiting and closing charged move loops — Sableye in Great League is the most famous example. In raids, Return is almost always outclassed by the species’ other Charged Moves. Unlike Frustration, Return can be replaced with a Charged TM at any time.

The Shadow Pokémon Decision Framework

Purifying a Shadow Pokémon is one of the most consequential decisions in Pokémon GO. Use this framework to ensure you never regret a purification:

1

Default to keeping Shadow — the 20% Attack boost makes Shadow Pokémon the strongest raid attackers for most species, and purification is irreversible

2

Only purify when conditions overlap — Mega Evolution eligibility, hundo potential (13/13/13+), or owning a second high-IV copy

3

Never purify Shadow Mewtwo or Shadow Legendaries unless you have a second copy — they are the hardest to re-obtain and the strongest in their roles

4

Wait for Frustration-removal events — do not purify just to fix a bad moveset; use Charged TMs during Team GO Rocket Takeovers

5

Model before deciding — use the Shadow Calculator to compare Shadow vs. Purified stats, power-up costs, and battle performance for any species
